Alexander Payne

Alexander PayneIn 1978, Alexander Payne was a film student at the University of Northern Colorado, where he shared a classroom with a friend. As he called her, Eugene Kim was the one who first spurred Alexander Payne on to filmmaking. A few of his early pictures were a little unsteady, but he quickly developed a reputation as an accomplished filmmaker. He has a long list of critically acclaimed and award-winning films.

In 1996, Payne made the film Citizen Ruth and followed that up with Election in 1999. In 2002, he made About Schmidt, where Jack Nicholson won an Oscar for Best Actor. About Schmidt was Payne’s initial film to receive over $100 million at the box office and it also got him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Screenplay.

Afterward, Alexander worked on The Descendants, released in 2012 and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay. This year, Alexander Payne filmed the story of a guy who shrinks himself to be closer to his wife, Downsizing 2016. Payne was nominated for three Academy Awards for Downsizing, but he could not take home any of the trophies.

Payne stated that he intended to make a film that tackled today’s social and environmental challenges, particularly those related to the environment. Also on Alexander Payne’s list of influences was Alfred Hitchcock, whose films made him laugh. Chris Nolan’s early movies are also a favorite of his. Payne is reportedly working on a film adaptation of “Slow Days,” according to a recent report.

Despite his success as a filmmaker and the multiple prizes he has received, Alexander remains modest. “It’s lovely to get accolades, but I think it’s better just to make terrific movies,” he said a few years back. Since Alexander Payne is also a huge fan of the Grateful Dead, you may want to bring up the subject if you’ve never heard their music or seen them perform live.
