This article covers at a glance, a brief bio of Mr. David McDonald, the current chief operating officer and the president of OSI group. David was born and raised in the northeast part of Iowa. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the Iowa State University in 1987. David commenced his career journey with OSI group in Chicago as a project manager in the same year. Thirty years later, he stands as the president of the OSI group. Before becoming president, he chaired North America Meat Institute. Besides being the president of the food processing company, he is a member of the board of directors and the director of the OSI international foods in Australia.
It is under his leadership, as project manager, that company expanded its markets to the Asia Pacific with K&K, a joint venture established in Taiwan. Since then, they have moved to Philippines, Mexico, China and many other locations globally.
Today, the company is operating in more than a dozen countries with over 20,000 employees and 65 facilities. McDonald has emphasized on adapting to change as one of the strategies to secure the future of the company. And most importantly quickly adapting to ever-changing customer trends which influence rearing of animals, product origin, and branding. Therefore, the company should strive to meet the customers’ taste and preferences. He has also allowed local management to handle operation at their level because they understand the culture and what people prefer, and thus they make reasonable solutions.
After the acquisition of Baho Foods, McDonald stated that his company would have a much stronger base in Europe since Baho is a Dutch manufacturer. He also said that the action was significant since it would help meet customers’ needs.
In his interview with inspirery, David McDonald feels that his success entrenched from the ability of his company to create valuable partnerships. Every local management has invested in understanding their customer, and thus useful decision can be made. Collectively, they can conquer the industry. He also states that innovation is the only way to keep OSI group in the business.
Other recent acquisitions during McDonald’s tenure include; a former Tyson food plant in Chicago which gave OSI more production options, flagship Europe and therefore taking over production of poultry, pie, and condiments. Expansion in Spain and Germany is in progress.
